Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in K-12 Public Education

The Asian American and Pacific Islander student population is one of fastest growing racial groups in urban and surrounding communities. National and state attention has focused on reforming public education, however, without deep consideration of education programs that have positive impact on the most disenfranchised segments of the Asian American and Pacific Islander student population including English Learners, immigrants, Pacific Islanders and Southeast Asians. This workshop will address the issues facing these Asian American and Pacific Islander students and the challenges they face to succeed in an increasingly competitive global economy. This workshop highlights best practices that have proven to improve the education outcomes for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, particularly the subgroups that are at most risk for academic failure.

The Asian Pacific American Legal Center is a California State Bar certified provider of MCLE credits and this workshop has been approved for 1 hour of credit. To receive California MCLE credit, attorneys must pay an additional $10 per workshop that offers MCLE credit. Payment collected separately onsite.

Census 2010: How to Make Your Community Count

This workshop will present an overview of Census 2010, including what it is, why it is important to our community and where we are in the process. The workshop will also examine what strategies and resources are available for organizations to encourage their community members to participate in the 2010 Census. Panelists will past strategies used to encourage an accurate count of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, what messages have been found to be effective for the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, and what is the real-world impact of having an inaccurate count.

Immigration Enforcement in Our Own Backyard

While immigration reform in Washington, D.C. has stalled for the past three years, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents continue to invade and destabilize immigrant communities. Raids on homes and workplaces tear families apart. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s presence in local jails continues to be threat as is the increasing trend towards local law enforcement collaboration with federal authorities. This workshop will discuss local efforts, both successful and unsuccessful, to halt immigration enforcement activities by the police and sheriff departments across a number of cities.

We, Too, Are America: Strengthening Immigrant Integration Policy in the United States

Despite being a “nation of immigrants”, the United States has no official integration policy that supports the economic mobility and civic participation of immigrant communities or that addresses the need for societal openness to immigrants in an ever more global environment. Renowned panelists will discuss the need for such a policy, as well as provide insight on new research, advocacy and proposed legislation toward the adoption of an immigrant integration agenda.
