White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Christina Lagdameo was appointed Deputy Director of the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders on April 26, 2010. Prior to this she worked for 7 years for the White House Office of Management and Budget and examined over $45 billion in federal income support programs, including the Earned Income Tax Credit, Refugee Resettlement and issues relating to asset poverty.</p>
<p>Ms. Lagdameo is committed to the social, economic, and political empowerment of marginalized communities including low-income individuals, women and youth. As an undergraduate at the University of Maryland, she led the successful struggle to establish the first Asian American Studies Program in the DC metropolitan area. She is a Public Policy and International Affairs Fellow, a Presidential Management Fellow and received her Master&#8217;s in Public Policy from the New School for Social Research in New York City. Ms. Lagdameo very recently returned from India where she worked for over 2 years with an organization that rescues and rehabilitates women and children survivors of sex trafficking.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Ms. Kehaulani Vaughn coordinates the program leading to undergraduate success, a federally funded program, at the University of California, Los Angeles. The program serves first generation, low-income college students in order to ensure their retention and academic success. Ms. Vaughn advises on Pacific Islander community issues and works with nonprofits, community organizations, and institutions of higher education.</p>
<p>Ms. Vaughn holds a master’s degree from UCLA and a bachelor’s degree from Occidental College. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In this capacity, Mr. Joey Atoigue Quenga helps provide services and assistance to Pacific Islanders and their families in the greater Los Angeles area, including: cultural promotion and preservation, health and welfare, breast cancer research, senior care management, tobacco education and prevention services and HIV/AIDS education. </p>
<p>Mr. Quenga also directs the Pacific Islander Epidemiology Center, a national program housed at GCN, which focuses on collecting, analyzing and reporting on the health status of Pacific Islanders in this country.  He also co-directs Kutturan Chamoru Performers, a volunteer group dedicated to learning and promoting the traditional folkdance of the Micronesian Marianas Islands.  Mr. Quenga received the Tan Chong Padula “humanitarian of the year” award and the “Maga’lahi” award for “off-island contribution” Guam governor’s award. </p>
<p>Mr. Quenga holds a bachelor’s degree from San Francisco State University.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Mr. Jonathan Lepule has been advocating for Pacific Islander services for more than 10 years in the nonprofit arena.  Mr. Lepule advocates for Native Hawaiian / Pacific Islander services at the local, state, and federal levels.  He has also worked with other nonprofit organizations in collaborations that advocate for NHPI services.  He speaks at various conferences on the health issues that the NHPI population faces.</p>
<p>While at San Diego State University, Mr. Lepule was one of the co-founders of the Pacific Islander Student Association. As an officer, Mr. Lepule was instrumental in ensuring that the Pacific Islander cultural influences were combined with educational futures of high school students.  He helped to coordinate many high school conferences and spoke with many future college students about his experience as a Pacific Islander/Samoan university student.</p>
<p>Mr. Lepule holds a bachelor’s degree from San Diego State University.    </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Mr. Daniel Ichinose also oversees APALC’s Census Information Center (CIC) and is the lead researcher on several projects, including a recent study of limited-English proficient populations across California’s legislative districts, and ongoing studies of AAPI political participation. From 1999 to 2001, Mr. Ichinose worked closely with activists throughout California to construct the AAPI community’s first statewide redistricting proposal, and testified before the California State Assembly’s Committee on Elections, Reapportionment, and Constitutional Amendments.</p>
<p>Mr. Ichinose was a member of the Los Angeles Police Commission’s Hate Crimes Task Force and the APIA Vote! Committee of the Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council. He also sat on the boards of the Japanese American Citizens League’s Pacific Southwest District and Hapa Issues Forum. Mr. Ichinose holds a master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Mr. Daniel Seokhwan Choi represents and advocates on behalf of Virginia’s low-wage immigrant community, particularly focusing on Latinos and Asian Americans.  He represents hundreds of clients in various levels of civil litigation, predominantly focusing on wage-theft cases.  Mr. Choi also advocates for Virginia’s immigrant community with elected officials and community leaders at all levels of government.  </p>
<p>Mr. Choi sits on the Coalition of Asian Pacific Americans of Virginia’s board and runs the independent Virginia Asian Pacific American Roundtable.  He was also a Peace Corps volunteer in El Salvador.</p>
<p>Mr. Choi holds a bachelor’s degree from New York Law School and a bachelor’s degree from Binghamton University, State University of New York.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As part of his academic work, Dr. Russell Jeung is conducting research on emerging Asian American communities, including Burmese refugees and Mongolian undocumented residents.  </p>
<p>Dr. Jeung is the author of “Faithful Generations: Race and New Asian American Churches” as well as articles on race, religion, and community organizing.  He is also co-producer and co-director of the documentary “The Oak Park Story,” which details the unlikely housing struggle of a group of multiethnic tenants.  </p>
<p>Dr. Jeung holds a doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley.  </p>
